Who we are and what we look like, which foods we can tolerate and which we cannot, the diseases that threaten an individual... that and much more is largely set in our genes. The holistic analysis of genomes is therefore becoming increasingly important. In particular, the method known as "sequencing-by-synthesis" has made enormous progress since its development. Speed and precision have increased by several orders of magnitude, while costs have also decreased by several orders of magnitude. The positioning techniques employed in the microscope systems used for this purpose have also contributed significantly to this.

DNA Recombination: Detection of Fluorescence Signals

In this method, fluorescence-labelled nucleotides are added as a complement to template DNA. Recombination produces characteristic fluorescence light signals, which are detected microscopically. In order to read out these short-lived and weak fluorescence signals reliably and comprehensibly, PI offers high-precision microscope stages for XY(Z) positioning in the Flowcell and PIFOC® objective positioning stages for the correct focus height in Z. Several drive technologies are available for each of these subsystems, each with its own characteristic properties and specifications: From piezo motors, to magnetic direct drives, and voice coil motors.
